History
These wagons, built from 1911 to 1923, were a development of Dia 1501, introduced by Surrey Walker in 1911. They were mainly through piped, but later some were fully fitted. The differences between the diagrams were small, and possibly only referred to the means of tethering the animals in transit. Photographs show that the securing points on the sides varied considerably, and builders are advised to seek a photograph of their prototype to ensure that their model is as accurate as possible. Some wagons may have been fitted with 3’1” plain wagon wheels in later life, and this option is provided by the provision of alternative rocking unit etches. Brake gear also varied, the kit provides for the more complicated clasp brake.
LSWR numbers included 9183, 15068 and 15084, it is possible that others filled in the sequence between the latter two. On grouping SR numbers were between 51501 and 51749, 51803 – 51816 incl. for Dia.1501, and 51503,51753, 51777, 51802, 51817 – 51831incl., 51846 –51870 incl.
Livery would have been the lighter passenger brown with white lettering and black running gear in LSWR days, solebars matching the body colours. After grouping, the SR continued the same livery with revised SR lettering, 18” high. Any survivors would have received the 1936 4” lettering, later reduced to 3”.
